Automatic Transmission Service Cost in Sydney: What Your Quote Should Include

Comparing transmission service quotes in Sydney? Understand fluid, filter and labour costs, what to ask a workshop, and when a fault needs diagnosis first.

A quote for an automatic transmission service can look surprisingly different from one workshop to the next. Before you decide that one is expensive, check whether both workshops are pricing the same job.

The useful question is simple: which fluid, which parts and which procedure does your particular gearbox need? Getting those details in writing makes the price much easier to judge.

Three things behind the total.

Fluid. Parts. Procedure. A basic fluid change and a service that includes a filter or replacement pan can have different costs. Match the work to your gearbox before comparing the totals.

01 / Understanding the price

How much does an automatic transmission service cost in Sydney?

Published local workshop guides offer a starting point. The examples below come from two separate providers and describe different scopes of work. They are indicative Australian dollar amounts, not a Sydney average or prices offered by Servistar.

Service describedPublished guideHow to read it
Drain, refill and inspection$250 to $550Sutherland Shire Auto Centre’s broad NSW guide for a straightforward service.
More involved transmission service$500 to $1,000+The same guide allows more for items such as filters, pan gaskets, specialist fluid or diagnostics.
Volkswagen DSG service$400 to $650Platinum Automotive’s estimate for VWs outside warranty. Model, parts and labour affect the actual price.

A higher quote needs an explanation. Ask the workshop to identify the extra fluid, parts or labour. A lower quote needs the same scrutiny: find out what it leaves out before treating it as better value.

02 / Identify the gearbox

“Automatic” is not enough detail for an accurate quote

A conventional automatic, a continuously variable transmission, usually called a CVT, and a dual clutch gearbox can have different fluid and service requirements. DSG is a name used for Volkswagen Group dual clutch transmissions.

Give the workshop your registration, year, model and engine details. If the specification is unclear, ask them to identify the transmission using the VIN before ordering parts. A badge on the boot or the number of gears may not settle it.

The fluid specification matters more than a description such as “premium oil”. ZF’s transmission fluid and service kit guidance shows why products are matched to particular applications. Ask for the specification required by your vehicle, rather than choosing a fluid by colour or brand alone.

03 / Know what is being done

Fluid change, filter service or transmission flush?

These descriptions can cover different work. Ask the workshop to spell out its method and explain why it suits your transmission.

Drain and refill

The workshop drains the accessible fluid and refills the transmission using the specified procedure. This does not necessarily replace all the fluid in the system or include a new filter. Ask how much fluid is allowed for.

Pan and filter service

Where applicable, this adds work on the transmission pan and filter. Some designs use a replaceable filter; others combine it with the pan. The quote should identify which parts your gearbox needs.

Fluid exchange or flush

Ask exactly what “flush” means in the quote. Does it describe a fluid exchange, and are any chemicals proposed? ZF’s guidance for its automatic transmissions says not to add supplementary additives or cleaning agents. Confirm the approved method for your vehicle.

Procedure is part of the labour cost. For example, ZF’s oil change instructions require the correct fluid level and temperature checks. That is a reason to ask about the process, even when two quotes list the same oil.

04 / Keep this beside your quote

Six details to confirm before booking

You do not need to become a transmission specialist. A useful quote should let you answer these six questions without guessing.

Transmission service / scope of work

OWNER’S CHECKLIST
  1. 1. Which transmission is being serviced?Check that the workshop has identified the gearbox fitted to your vehicle, including the variant where needed.
  2. 2. Which fluid, and how much?Request the product specification and quantity included. “Transmission oil” alone leaves too much open.
  3. 3. Which parts are included?Ask whether the job requires a filter, pan, gasket, seals or replacement fasteners, and whether these are in the price.
  4. 4. What does the labour cover?Confirm the service method, level setting and final checks. Ask whether a road test or scan is included where appropriate.
  5. 5. Is diagnosis a separate charge? If you reported a shudder or delayed engagement, clarify the assessment cost before authorising maintenance or repairs.
  6. 6. What is the total I am approving?Confirm GST, fluid disposal and any other charges. Agree that extra work needs your approval, and ask for the completed work to be recorded on the invoice.

For the broader questions about estimates, labour and parts, see our guide to comparing car repair quotes. Use the checklist above to make that comparison specific to the transmission.

05 / Service history matters

When is a transmission service actually due?

Start with the manufacturer’s schedule for your exact vehicle and transmission. There is no single kilometre interval that fits every automatic, CVT and DSG. The transmission schedule may also differ from the engine service schedule.

Tell the workshop how you use the car. For a Sydney driver, that might mean weekday commuting followed by towing a trailer on weekends. Include previous transmission work and any gaps in the service history.

In its 2026 transmission maintenance guidance, ZF highlights oil ageing, high temperatures, heavy loads and unknown past usage, while stressing manufacturer specifications. Living in Sydney alone is not a reason to invent a shorter interval. Ask the workshop which requirement or condition supports its recommendation.

06 / A service or an investigation?

Describe the symptom before choosing the service

If your reason for booking is a new shudder, a delay selecting Drive or an unusual shift, tell the workshop before accepting a routine service quote. A fluid service is maintenance. It should not be sold to you as a guaranteed cure for an unidentified fault.

Make your description useful

  • Does it happen when the car is cold, warm or both?
  • Does it happen selecting a gear, pulling away or changing speed?
  • Are there warning messages, leaks or recent repairs?
  • When did it start, and is it becoming more frequent?

If the car loses drive, shows an overheating warning or develops a substantial leak, stop somewhere safe and seek assistance. Follow the vehicle handbook. If you have noticed a puddle, our guide to fluid leaking under a car explains which observations can help the workshop.

Before you book

Common transmission service questions

Is a transmission service included in a regular car service?

Do not assume it is. Check the quoted scope and the scheduled items due for your vehicle. An engine oil change does not tell you whether the transmission fluid or filter is being replaced.

Can I compare a CVT service price with a DSG quote?

They are different transmission types, so the work and materials may differ. Compare quotes for your own gearbox and the same scope. Neither label has one universal price.

Should I book a flush if the service history is missing?

Start by giving the workshop the vehicle details and any symptoms. Ask it to check the applicable service guidance and assess what is needed. Missing records alone do not identify the right method.

What should I keep after the service?

Keep the invoice showing the date, odometer reading, fluid specification, parts and work completed. Ask the workshop to record the next service recommendation and explain what it is based on.
